Well done to Lee, Alanagh, Lauren, Emil, Tammie, Cillian, Brodie, Claire, Eve, Renata and Ayse who did a fantastic job on their Arctic art projects!! Thanks to those at home who helped them :) They have learned lots about the Arctic and all the different animals that live there! Quiz them at home on what they've learned - they'll be delighted to show off their knowledge! :)

Let's get the Yellow Flag for Ravenswell!

We are delighted to announce that Ravenswell is one of 15 schools in Ireland taking part in the Yellow Flag Programme 2014-2015.

What is the Yellow Flag Programme?
The Yellow Flag is a year long programme that celebrates diversity and different cultures.
Over the year we will be working through the 8 Steps of the programme to further develop our welcoming and diverse school.

The 8 Steps of the programme are:

1. Intercultural and Anti-Racism Training for Staff and Management
   2. Going beyond the School’s Walls: Engaging with the Community
   3. Establishing a Diversity Committee
   4. Conducting an Intercultural Review
   5. Formulating an Action Plan for a Diverse School
   6. Monitoring and Evaluation and Information Dissemination-
   7. Curriculum work-
   8. Production of a Diversity Code and Anti Racist Policy for the school

We are currently on Step 4-The Intercultural Review. Children from 2nd-6th as well as every parent in the school received a questionnaire- thank you for completing these! :)

Keep an eye on the class blogs as well as the Yellow Flag Noticeboard (outside Room 5) for the results of the questionnaires. These will help us in our next step- creating an action plan for a diverse school.

It is sure to be an exciting year as we work towards achieving our Yellow Flag- there will fun events and opportunities for parents to get involved as we celebrate our multicultural school.

Music Makers in Third Class!!

The boys and girls of third class have been learning lots in violin class.

They have a class every Monday and have learned how to handle the violin, the scales and chords and they have also began playing The Waltz.

They thoroughly enjoy it and I look forward to seeing their progress throughout the year!

Active Week

We had a fantastic week for Active week. We had a hula hoop competition, teachers versus students basketball match, jersey day, sports day at Bray Emmet's and everyone brought their bikes to school for a bike workshop. We had so much fun and the weather was beautiful!

Time to Say Goodbye to Our Chicks.

As we are coming to the end of the school year, it was time to send our chicks off to their new home. We had such a great time looking after them and watching them grow. We've learned so much!

We are very sad to see them go but we know they are going to be very happy in their new home.

5 Days Old!

Our chicks are doing really well and are already growing so quickly! We were delighted to see that a fourth egg had hatched over the weekend, so we now have 4 very healthy and happy chicks!

 Our newest arrival, Chip...

They love to sleep under the warmth of a lamp and on the hot water bottle.

Ms. Healy was on chick-sitting duties over the weekend...

We had to change our black chick's name to Penguin because, as he got fluffier, he started to look more and more like one!

Hatching Day!

We arrived into school this morning to two fuzzy, brown chicks! The chick that began hatching yesterday emerged overnight, along with a second one! We had another surprise then this morning when a third one hatched before our eyes! It really is amazing!!!

This chick had just popped out of its egg in these photo!

 Sleepy chicks!

We were very excited to spread the news!

First Signs of Life!

Exactly 21 days after we put our eggs into the incubator we have heard the first signs of life. One of our chicks began cheeping from inside the egg!!

Below is a video in which you can hear the cheeping and see small pieces of cracked shell on the floor of the incubator beside the egg. It can take some time for the chick to come all of the way out of the egg so we still have to wait a while and hope that it comes out healthy!

We're Nearly There!!

We're nearly at the end of our 21 days of incubation. At this stage the chicks should be fully grown inside the egg and getting read to hatch. Here's a chart showing the growth of the chicks inside the eggs over the 21 days.

Day 15 in the Incubator!

We've been keeping a close eye on our eggs!
Today we 'candled' them again and above is what we saw. There's definitely something in there! Some eggs appear to have grown more than others which would suggest that some may not hatch. We're keeping our fingers crossed!

Day 6 in the Incubator.

Our eggs have been in the incubator for nearly a week. Today we 'candled' the eggs which means we shone a light through them to see if we could see the chicks growing inside. Below is a picture of what we saw!

The shadow in the middle is the chick growing inside!

A Visit from an Author.

We had a lovely visit from Jackie Burke, the author of The Secrets of Grindlewood. She told us all about her book, which we are reading at the moment, as well as all about herself and how she became an author. We are all really eager to start writing now!

Technology at Our Fingertips!

We absolutely love our new tablets!
They have made all sorts of subjects, such as project work, English and Maths, even more fun to do!

Springtime has Arrived!!

Now that Spring has finally arrived, fourth class have been keeping an eye on our box in the school garden. We planted flowers a few months ago and they're still looking beautiful! Here's hoping we have more sunshine like we had this day!
