Arctic and Antarctica Science Experiment

This is a 3rd class experiment. We were testing to see if butter and margarine (which we used as a substitute for animal blubber) could keep animals warm in the freezing cold Arctic and Antarctica.

We got two freezer bags, turned one inside out and pressed the seals together. Next we put margarine and butter between the two layers. This created a glove of margarine and butter.

We got two buckets of water and poured ice into both. After that we started testing our hypotheses. We took turns putting one hand straight into the freezing water and putting the other hand, which was covered in our blubber glove, into the freezing water.

We found that the blubber would help to keep you warm in freezing conditions. And we also had lots of fun!

Viking Longship artwork

3rd class created these beautiful long ship paintings. We mixed the paint with sugar and salt to give it extra texture. The skies are painted with water colours and oil pastels were used for the more detailed areas.

Viking Group Projects

Here is a picture of the four group projects which are on display outside our classroom.

Our Viking Project

This month, we have been studying The Vikings and learning all about their way of life. The boys and girls chose which topic they wanted to research and created amazing group projects.

Group one: Viking Long ships
Group two:  Viking Longhouses
Group three: viking Gods and Goddesses
Group four: Viking Warriors and Weapons

Iris, Hanna, Ava and Blanka also made amazing long houses and longship to go with their projects.

Tom Crean Presentation

We have been learning about Tom Crean, the great explorer. Tom Crean was from Dingle, Co. Kerry, and was one of the greatest explorers and heroes of the Antarctic. In groups, the children researched areas of his life such as; his life in the Navy, his expeditions on the Discovery, the Terra Nova and the Endurance and even his life back in Kerry when his adventures were over.
The boys and girls created a PowerPoint Presentation and presented it in front of 5th class and both 1st classes. They spoke with great confidence and expression and answered all the questions really well. Well done!
